Moe Casey

Fragments of time

Moe has been interested in images from ancient times which appear as simple marks, evoking the relationship between the individual and their environment. This kind of simple mark making, such as a handprint on a cave wall, has been used for millennia by people across the globe. This is also seen in labyrinths carved on rock and in abstract marks made in megalithic tombs.

In this series of work Moe was drawn to images made in Ireland that represent the sun, moon and stars and how they influenced the cycle of the seasons. She wants to maintain this simplicity of representation so that the essence remains and resonates at a time when our relationship with our own environment is ever more complex and critical.

Moe’s work continues to explore themes of the individual and collective by focusing on images of fingerprints and hands, adding the double helix of DNA to some of the pieces to emphasise the similarities we all share, and the differences that makes each one unique.

The fingerprint can also resemble a labyrinth or maze and is used to show the creative process as a winding path.
